The Mussington Brothers

BECAUSE OF THE MUSSINGTON BROTHERS.......

The Mussington Brothers is one of the Caribbean's finest and undoubtedly Anguilla's most prominent international band. Raised in a Christian family, they performed in the church where the brothers worshipped as young boys. In 1989 when Dianne Norris discovered them and charted their way forward they acquired international fame.

Since then the members of this musical family have allowed people everywhere to experience the depth of their talent and versatility by producing music which is a unique blend of Caribbean rhythms of reggae, calypso, zouk and meringue. They have expanded their repertoire by playing other kinds of music such as R&B and hip-hop.

But it was not all cool sailing for the Mussington Brothers. They suffered two major setbacks which threatened their very existence. The first was the untimely death of Dexter, the baby brother, in 1996. He was the band's
arranger and a brilliant keyboardist. The second major setback was the sad passing of another brother, David(Davie), in 2001. He was a first class guitarist. The loss of two brothers within five years had convinced the boys that it was time to call it quits. But the love of music was too powerful for the brothers to resist. Neither could they resist the demands of their fans at home and abroad who wanted the Mussington Brothers back.

BACK THEY CAME !! It was remarkable how the brothers,Darvin(vocals), Delbert(vocals), Desmond(drums) and Danny(sound engineer) managed to pull themselves together and breathe new life into the band. With the addition of: Asher Brooks on keyboards, Kirtis France on bass, Tony Herbert on guitar, the bi-lingual Juan "Moses" Pina and Shyrone Hughes on the frontline in the vocal spotlight, they propelled themselves to take their music to every corner of the world - and their high energy performances, since the band's rebirth can only be described as magical.

Throughout their musical career which spans some fourteen years, the Mussington Brothers performed in several states in the USA. These included Massachussetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Florida and California. Actually they were recipients of many accolades in New York and was voted the best dance band in Philadelphia. On the west coast, they performed at the famous House of Blues in Hollywood, California where they opened the show which included the international reggae artist Andrew Tosh. Futhermore,
the band has appeared with other top soca bands like Krosfyah, Atlantik, Burning Flames, Square One, Byron Lee & The Dragonnaires and reggae artists Burning Spear, Sean Paul and Sizzla.

The Mussington Brothers are famous in the Caribbean and performed in places like U.S. and British Virgin Islands, St. Maarten, St. Martin, Saba, St. Eustatius, St.Kitts-Nevis and Dominica. At home in Anguilla, the band captured the Bandorama title on three occasions and the Road March and Band of the Year title five times.

When it comes to soul Darvin is hard to beat. He is also a first class calypsonian as, during the 2000 local Calypso Monarch Competition, he almost ran away with the Calypso crown with a stunning rendition of Proud to be Black ( or Black Man Kaiso). The song emphasized the importance of love for self and self-confidence in the development of a people. Darvin called on Anguillians to be proud of their colour and of their African ancestry, and said of himself: "I want to keep my identity." His commentary was timely. It came at that phase in our people's development when confidence in themselves was badly needed to help them grow as a nation proud, strong and free.

For sure, the Mussington Brothers feel proud, strong and free as they occupy the pinnacle of music in Anguilla and stand shoulder to shoulder with the best in the Caribbean. The year 2002 was a particularly rewarding one for them. The Anguilla's Summer Festival 2002 " Dig Um Wid Music "rewarded them with the Road March Champions. Earlier they captured the first ever Clash of the Giants title that featured the Nu-Vybes and Small Axe bands, both from St. Kitts, and the AXA band out of Anguilla. Their latest release(2002) entitled Pure Pleasure is a wonderful musical collection featuring Spanish and French Creole music as well as Soca, Reggae and R&B. The eleven-track CD is a masterpiece. "Together Forever" from the same CD was number one on the charts for 8 weeks.

Because of the Mussington Brothers the standard of music in Anguilla has been lifted to new heights. Most people would agree that they blazed the trail so that others could follow. And they have followed and Anguilla is
the better for it.

It is because of the joy which the music of the Mussington Brothers has brought to the hearts of Anguillian people that they could face tomorrow as a happy people with much appreciation for the beauty of life. It was William Shakespeare who wrote. "If music be the food of love play on........." But the Mussington Brothers say, "Music is the champagne of life. Drink it!".
